HISTORY
Riverwood Mental Health Services was founded in 1982 to provide community mental health services for persons who suffer from serious mental illnesses, primarily schizophrenia, bi-polar, and depressive disorders. Over the years, Riverwood has evolved from operating a single group home into a multi-faceted community service provider covering southeastern Rhode Island from Providence to Newport. In 2006 Riverwood expanded it's mission and began providing services for individuals and families that were experiencing chronic homelessness.
Riverwood's administrative office is located in Warren, RI and the organization employs 85 full and part-time employees and has an operating budget of approximately $5.2 million.
Services include:
Group homes in Barrington and Portsmouth- which provide safe settings for people to begin their transition to living independently as they work on their recovery.
An elder care group home in Tiverton- which provides residential treatment for older people with mental illness who also have medical issues often related to the aging process.
Assertive Community Treatment Team- based in Warren which brings services into the community to assist individuals with serious and persistant mental illnesses who are living independently. This multidisciplinary team provides an intensive level of support to assist people in coordinating a network of service to meet their goals.
Supported Apartments- In September of 2004, Riverwood opened a 10-unit apartment building in downtown Warren financed partially with HUD 811 funds. Staff are on site to help residents meet the demands of day-to-day living.
Homeless Services- Based on the Housing first model, a nationally acclaimed and evidence based practice for working with the chronically homeless population. Riverwood's Housing First RI program provides housing and intensive case management services to over 150 individuals and families living throughout central Rhode Island.
