HISTORY

Riverwood Mental Health Services was founded in 1982 to provide community mental health services for persons who suffer from serious mental illnesses, primarily schizophrenia, bi-polar, and depressive disorders. Over the years, Riverwood has evolved from operating a single group home into a multi-faceted community service provider covering southeastern Rhode Island from Providence to Newport.

Riverwood's administrative office is located in Warren, RI and the organization employs 62 full and part-time employees and has an operating budget of approximately $3 million.

Services include:

Group homes in Barrington and Portsmouth which provide safe settings for people to begin their transition
to living independently as they work on their recovery.

An elder care group home in Tiverton which provides residential treatment for older people with mental illness who also have medical issues often related to the aging process.

A Mobile Treatment Team based in Warren which brings services into the community to assist individuals with complex needs who are living independently.  This multidisciplinary team provides and intensive level of support to assist people in coordination a network of service to meet their goals.  In the spring of 2004, we began offering this service to persons from the greater Providence area out of our satellite office located at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Supported Apartments-  In September of 2004, Riverwood opened a 10-unit apartment building in downtown Warren financed partially  with HUD 811 funds.  Staff are on site to help residents meet the demands of day-to-day living.
